What If Your Feet Are Not Average?

March 07, 2018

Shoes come in a variety of lengths and widths, but what if your not-so-average feet don’t feel so comfortable in the standardized sizes shoes come in?

The American Podiatric Medical Association calculates that 47% of Americans suffer from some form of foot ailment. While some are caused by serious medical problems, a surprising number are caused by wearing shoes that don’t fit properly.

Length and width are certainly important in fitting footwear comfortably, but proper fit goes beyond these basics. A shoe should conform to the shape of your foot, and it should suit the activities in which you’ll engage while wearing the shoes.

Suggestions for shopping for shoes that will fit properly:
Shop for shoes later in the day when your feet have settled and swollen by as much as 8%.

  • Have your feet measured at least once a year while you’re standing with your full weight on them. Feet change as we age and feet can even keep growing. Since feet often vary slightly in size, be sure to have both feet measured and buy the larger size.
  • Don’t go by the size marked on the shoe. As with other wearable clothing items, size varies brand to brand. Try the shoes on…both shoes. Buy the size that feels comfortable, regardless of what the size is on the shoebox. Walk around wearing the shoes to test them for comfort on different surfaces.
  • The tip of the shoe should extend ½“ beyond your longest toe. Too little room and your toes will be pinched; too much room and your feet will slide inside the shoe. Don’t buy a longer shoe expecting to gain width. Instead, search out an alternative style. And never count on solving a width issue by stretching the shoe. It hardly ever works.
  • Buy shoes that fit the shape of your foot. A wider round or square toe box will allow your toes to lay naturally and comfortably.

Comfortable, well made shoes are an investment. Shop at stores with a variety of styles and prices for the best chance at finding shoes you’ll love to wear without risking foot and ankle problems.
Above all, don’t count on over-the-counter inserts to fix uncomfortable shoes. They don’t provide the support to get your feet into a properly balanced, natural position. And they wear out quickly.
